Milwaukee Public Museum
Posted On 11/05/2008 17:58:25

I really do love museums, and it has been a few years since I have braved the downtown Milwaukee construction, but on a sunny Saturday I decided to grab a few of my favorite people and venture to the Milwaukee Public Museum. I was sure glad I did, it was great!

Not only was it really easy to breeze along the newly constructed 94 system, but what a surprise to find out that there was a Titanic exhibition taking place at the museum as well. I loved it, just loved it....We took the audio tour and embarked on a fantastic journey. As we entered the exhibit we were all given an identity of an actual passenger on the original Titanic, as we waited our turn we shared with one another all of the info we had received on who we were going to become for the duration of our visit. We entered the area to find ourselves transformed to another time and space, we were on the docks about to enter the fantastic ship, as we entered the ship we were shown so many real artifacts that were found at the bottom of the ocean, each had a memory attached and were explained in detail as we strolled along to the grand staircase. We saw the living arrangments of the first class passengers, as well as the third class...we were then taken on a journey through the days leading up to the crash of the iceburg. I could almost feel as though I had been there, everything shown to us had a meaning and belonged to one of the passengers.

We went through the exhibit(which was really like going through the ship) day by day until it was right in front of us...a real iceburg, you could even touch it!!! At the end of the tour we were all able to find out our fate....did we survive the most famous large ship crash of all time? Some of us did, and sadly a few of us had perished in the disaster. I was so engaged in these people that I googled all of us when I got home to find out how the rest of our lives turned out...it was great and well worth the time and money.

After the Titanic exhibit we had lunch and went through the rest of the museum. One of my favorite things to do is to stroll down The Streets of Old Milwaukee...and everything was still as wonderful as always...the shops, the doctors office and my all time favorite little old lady rocking on her front porch. The Europeon Village was fantastic as always, and I found myself in bewilderment just as I had been as a child, wanting to get inside those homes of all the different cultures in Europe, I was a kid again!

It was a great day spent with people I love enjoying one of the greatest Museums in the country. If you haven't been there in awhile...pack up the kids and spend a Saturday enjoying some good old fashioned culture and be sure to visit the Titanic!!

Caimbridge a great little town
Posted On 09/20/2008 17:58:04

Have you ever been to the town of Caimbridge? It is right in the county of Jefferson and just south of that one mall on 94 and the Johnson Creek exit. Do yourself a favor and skip the brick and mortar mall and head a few miles south to Caimbrdge. I spent my Saturday visiting family and heading to good old fashioned Main Street, what a great little city.

There are about 3 blocks of really cool stores. You will find antiques, art galleries, coffee shops, specialty stores and lots of fine food establishments. I went to almost every one of the shops today, spoke with the owners and had them show me their treasures.

The one thing that was mentioned more than anything, was how tough it is getting to keep a small business open during these hard economic times. These are Mom and Pop Shops that have been in business for 20 plus years all facing the possibility of losing everything. It is unbelievable to me that every little town I visited this past spring/summer has their small business owners all talking about closing their doors. These places are our communities, these folks are just like you and me...going to work seven days a week, barely getting by and all so they get to do what they love. The American Dream is dying in our own backyards...big corporations are coming in and destroying our small town charm, soon we will see nothing but Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens and Starbucks on every corner because no one else in America will be able to own anything.

One other great thing about Caimbridge is Lake Ripley. Beautiful lake, great fishing, boating and swimming for the whole family. Before our weather changes drastically...visit this town of fine Mom and Pop shops, a gorgeous lake and so much charm you will be sure to make it a yearly event!

Very Cool Coffee Shop (FIXX)
Posted On 08/27/2008 16:15:35

Well the name...FIXX..says it all...because you can certainly get your Fixx at this coffee house, whether it is caffeine, a decent sandwich, sugary treats, or fine folk music you are "jonesing" for...Fixx in St Francis is the place to go.

Actually, I found the place by accident. I was driving along Lake Drive (South on my way to Grant Park) and decided to see what was on this one side street right before Howard and there I found the Coffee House. I happened to walk in on a Thursday evening and there was a group setting up to play music. I stuck around and we had a few lattes and dinner.

What a nice surprise, great food, good coffee(organic) and fun music. I think they have music every Thursday and maybe some other nights as well. I really enjoyed the evening.

Newly discovered gem of a business in Delafield
Posted On 06/29/2008 22:37:31

As you may have noticed, I have been spending my weekends traveling around Southeastern Wisconsin exploring our communities looking for the "gems" and sharing that information with all of you.

Rising fuel, flooding and food costs have started to really affect our community small business owners. We need to do what we can to support our local communities and keep these wonderful operations alive and well during these hard times. I have decided to feature small businesses in my blogs as a way of saying thank you to those folks that are toughing it out and provide some of my favorite services.

This weekend I traveled to the downtown community of Delafield. How cool is that? There are so many fantastic shops and eating establishments it was hard to choose one to feature. I had to go with a great little gem I discovered on Genesee St...The Candy Bouquet. Near and dear to my heart, as not a day goes by that I do not pop something chocolate in my mouth.

This business is owned by a mother and daughter team, what genuinely nice people. As we strolled in we were welcomed not only by the decor but by one of the owners waving us over to try the fudge of the day. MMMMMMMM vanilla fudge, I had never tried this before and was impressed by its texture and flavor.

As I continued to fill my shopping bag with angel food, malted milk balls, gummies and special little chocolates for my favorite little angels, I started to pay attention to their in-store displays. They were some creations I would love to give as gifts for any celebration. They were packed full of candies and chocolates...plenty to share with the gift giver that is for sure

When I found out they also deliver, they won me over completley. Next time I am thinking of sending flowers I will switch over to a candy bouquet instead, they deliver anywhere in the world!!! They have a listing on ShopPass, with photos of everyone's favorites and not one, but two coupons for savings as well!! So next time you think of sending a gift, send a Candy Bouquet from the Delafield shop...or if you are out and about, drop in at downtown Delafield, you will not be disappointed in the least.

Downtown Oconomowoc Construction
Posted On 06/22/2008 10:41:59

So I spent part of my sunny Saturday in Oconomowoc yesterday. What a great downtown area, and I met some really nice small business owners. There is a ton of construction going on with one of the major streets...Wisconsin, which seems to have deterred the average summer strolling shoppers from venturing into the area. I just thought it was so odd to find this wonderful treasure basically abandoned on a Saturday when the weather finally has begun to cooperate.

I wanted to let the world know it is not that tough or inconvenient to get to the downtown businesses even with the rehaul of the area. There is plenty of parking right off the main drag behind the businesses, and the walk is just a few feet from behind. As a matter of fact, it isn't even that much of a chore to walk down the street and there is plenty of opportunity to cross the street at various points along Wisconsin.

One of my favorite stops yesterday was at a quaint coffehouse/cafe Whelans coffee and ice cream. First off, I loved the welcoming decor and the added patio out back was perfect for a beautiful summer day. I was fortunate enough to meet the owners, some of the most genuinely nice folks around. The latte I had was brewed to perfection, the employees are fun and really enjoyable to visit with. The variety of bakery, espresso drinks, smoothies and ice cream was tremendous. We also heard they are going to begin serving daily soups and get into the luncheon business.

I had never taken the time to visit downtown Oconomowoc, but with easy access to the lake this is really one of my new favorite weekend jaunts. I will go back to spend another Saturday or Sunday to discover even more small treasures like Whelons and grab a latte head across to the lake to enjoy the view. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Lazy Weekends
Posted On 06/01/2008 13:15:28

So the weather is getting to be just perfect here in Southeastern Wisconsin, and the time of year that I love to spend just going to new locations, seeing what there is to offer. This weekend I spent a lazy Sunday afternoon in Lake Geneva. What a great town. There is so much to offer, Mom and Pop businesses along main street that have been in the family for years and years. Good people, arts and attractions, galleries, coffeehouses, cafes, bed and breakfasts...

And of course the lake, golfing and resorts. Love Lake Geneva. My friend and I decided to get a feel for Lake Geneva before we took our day trip....we used ShopPass as a resource to get an idea of where we wanted to spend our time....we knew where to park, what streets had the most to offer and what shops, cafes and attractions we wanted to fit in.

I would suggest that if you have not spent a weekend in Lake Geneva...fit it into your summer this year!
